High Park School receives grant for grassroots community sport program
January 11, 2024 - An Alberta-based non-profit is making a big difference for students at a school in Stony Plain.
"The Makadiff Board of Directors is pleased to advise that High Park School has been granted $5,000 for the purposes of assisting with after-school athletic programming, as outlined in your proposal," explained a letter from Chris Lee, chairman of Makadiff Sports, and the honourable Lois Mitchell, director of Makadiff Sports.
The Makadiff Sports Board of Directors grant will be used to assist with after-school athletic programming at High Park School, which has students and teachers excited.
Makadiff Sports, a distinguished non-profit organization in Alberta that is dedicated to strengthening grassroots community sports, awarded High Park School the grant after receiving the application in late October 2023.
The school was thrilled to find out it was selected, which mean it will now be able to offer students a chance to take part in after-school sports without any fees that can cause barriers for families with financial problems.
The proposal from High Park School outlined that the after school programming will be for students in Grades 5 to Grades 7, with the hope of offering programming at a young age which will provide positive experiences that would compel the young students to continue their after-school activities into community teams and clubs.
The outline from the school shows a plan to provide a genuine team experience to all students and the older students will be able to help mentor, coach, ref and help organize the sports, including a tournament at the end of the season.
The plan is to run four programs: volleyball, basketball, pickleball and badminton.
The grant will allow the school to not only secure space for these programs but also provide equipment, allowing students to take part regardless of financial situation.
